2 bedrooms1 bathroomSleeps 4West Village, Manhattan

Four flights up, with the light to match

The apartment takes the top floor of a five-story brick building. It has two bedrooms, a living room with tall windows, and a kitchen with a breakfast bar.

Up here the street is quiet, and the afternoon sun reaches the far wall of the living room.

Living room with tall wood-framed windows, a daybed, a sofa and a wood floor

Leafy streets, ten minutes from everything

Bank Street is a short, tree-lined street of brick townhouses. Corner Bistro is five minutes away on foot, the Whitney and the High Line about twelve, and the 1 train at Christopher Street takes you uptown or down.

Most of what we recommend, from jazz to a good pasta shop, is on foot. The rest is a short subway ride.

Local secrets

Seven things a first-time visitor walks past without knowing.

A house nine and a half feet wide

Number 75½ Bedford Street is one of the narrowest houses in the city, 9 feet 6 inches across, and officially dates from 1873. The poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived there with her husband from 1923 to 1924.

Streets that ignore the grid

The West Village was laid out before the city's 1811 street grid, so West 4th Street crosses West 10th, and the streets wander. It is why a map is no use, and why the walking is good.

Thomas Paine's last address

Marie's Crisis, on Grove Street, stands on the site of Thomas Paine's last home, and is where he died. The bar added "Crisis" to its name for his pamphlet The American Crisis, and the piano sing-along goes on most nights.

A park built over a burial ground

Washington Square Park was a public burial ground from 1797 to 1825. Estimates say more than 20,000 people lie beneath it. The marble arch you see today was finished in 1892.

A national monument on Christopher Street

Stonewall National Monument covers Christopher Park and the streets around the Stonewall Inn. Its Visitor Center opened on June 28, 2024, is free, and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.

A railway in the air

The High Line was built as an elevated freight line, with the first train in 1933. Trains stopped in 1980, and the first section of the park, from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street, opened on June 8, 2009.

A carousel from Ohio

Jane's Carousel was carved in 1922 for Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio. Jane and David Walentas bought it in 1984, restored it over about 22 years, and it opened in Brooklyn Bridge Park on September 16, 2011.

Culture

For a century the Village has been where New York goes to be unconventional: painters, folk singers, jazz, poets. Much of it is still here, on streets you can cover in an afternoon.

Books set here

Two books to read before you arrive, or on the plane home.

Henry James, Washington Square (1880)

A novel set on the square, in the years when it was a fashionable address.

Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961)

Jacobs lived on Hudson Street, and used the street life she saw from her window to argue for how cities should work.

Music, writers and artists

Two people who made the neighborhood famous.

Edward Hopper (1882 to 1967)
Hopper moved to 3 Washington Square North in 1913 and lived and worked there for the rest of his life.
Bob Dylan
The cover of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan was photographed on Jones Street in February 1963, a few steps from West 4th Street.

Artisans and makers

Shops where something is still made by hand, or published by artists.

Raffetto's, 144 West Houston Street
A pasta shop that has been on Houston Street since 1906.
Printed Matter, Chelsea
A shop for artists' books, started in 1976 by artists.

Makers and galleries to visit today

Film and TV

Two screen addresses that fans still look for.

Sex and the City (1998 to 2004)
The show used the stoop of a townhouse on Perry Street as Carrie Bradshaw's home.
Friends (1994 to 2004)
The apartment building in the show's establishing shots is on the corner of Bedford and Grove Streets.
