Local secrets

Eight things most visitors walk past, taken from the city's own sources and checked on 13 October 2026.

A crater called the food bowl

Maungawhau's crater was known as the food bowl of Mataoho, after the deity linked to volcanic activity, and the hill was once a large pā with terraces, houses, gardens and pits for storing crops. At 196 metres it is Auckland's highest volcano, and it last erupted about 28,000 years ago.

An island that is only 600 years old

Rangitoto rose from the sea in a series of eruptions about 600 years ago, and Fullers360 calls it New Zealand's youngest and largest shield volcano. It is a pest-free sanctuary, so bags and shoes are checked before you board.

A pink path above the motorway

Te Ara I Whiti, the Lightpath, was designed by Monk Mackenzie Architects and LandLAB with the artist Katz Maihi. Black metal pou and carved designs line its western side, and LED lights along the barriers pulse as people pass.

An auction before breakfast

The Auckland Fish Market holds an auction from Monday to Friday: the catch can be viewed from 5 to 6am and bidding starts at 6. By the market's own account, Albert Sanford started the business in 1904.

An arcade from 1924

St Kevins Arcade, on Karangahape Road, dates to 1924. It now holds independent shops, studios, restaurants and music venues.

A grave on a volcano

Sir John Logan Campbell, who gave Cornwall Park to the city, is buried at the summit of Maungakiekie beside the obelisk. The hill was a fortified pā before Europeans arrived, and many of its earthworks can still be seen.

Tunnels on North Head

Maungauika North Head has a self-guided walk past tunnels and other military features. The reserve is administered by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority for Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau.

A restaurant that turns once an hour

Orbit360, at the top of the Sky Tower, completes one full rotation every hour, and Auckland NZ says it is the only rotating restaurant in the country. SkyBar, on level 50, is called New Zealand's highest bar.

Sources: Tūpuna Maunga Authority (maunga.nz), Fullers360, Department of Conservation, Auckland NZ (aucklandnz.com), Auckland Fish Market and Wynyard Quarter (sanford.co.nz, wynyard-quarter.co.nz), Cornwall Park Trust Board (cornwallpark.co.nz) and SkyCity. Checked on 13 October 2026.

Culture

Tāmaki Makaurau is a city of volcanoes, harbours and Pacific communities, and its writers, artists and screen stories keep coming back to that. Here is where to start.

Books

Albert Wendt, who taught New Zealand literature at the University of Auckland, is the writer to begin with.

Sons for the Return Home, Albert Wendt (1973)

A novel about a young Samoan man's life in New Zealand. Wendt was the University of Auckland's first professor of New Zealand literature, from 1988 to 2008.

Breaking Connections, Albert Wendt (2015)

Writers and artists

Two artists whose work belongs to Auckland.

Her video installation In Pursuit of Venus [infected] was first shown at Auckland Art Gallery in May 2015 and later represented New Zealand at the 2017 Venice Biennale.
Colin McCahon, in Titirangi 1953 to 1959
The painter lived at Titirangi in the Waitākere Ranges in the 1950s. A trust runs his house there as a museum; check whether it is open before you go.

Artisans and makers

A shop on Karangahape Road that gathers local makers.

Crushes, Karangahape Road
Art, homewares and slow fashion from more than 60 local makers, with workshops.

Makers and galleries to visit today

Film and TV

One film that put the west coast on the map, and one comedy set in the suburbs.

The Piano (1993)
Jane Campion shared the Palme d'Or at Cannes for it. Karekare beach on the west coast is where visitors go to see its scenery.
Bro'Town (2004 to 2009)
An animated comedy about five Polynesian teenage boys, set in the Auckland suburb of Morningside.

Places to visit

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira are both in the guide, with their hours.
